Abstract

Although adolescence is a relatively healthy time of life, it is also a time when unhealthy behaviours can develop, which may have long-term effects on adult health and well being. Issues such as smoking, drug taking, mental health and teenage pregnancy have been targeted in health-promotion programmes. Unfortunately, so far, although there have been positive improvements in terms of increasing adolescents' knowledge about risk, there have been few interventions which have been shown to change behaviours. Adolescents' uptake of primary health services has improved when services have been developed in consultation with them. Hospital services must also take into account the specific developmental and social needs of this age group.
