Abstract 

The immune system has evolved in order to prevent invasion by foreign organisms. This review outlines the principles and mechanisms of innate and acquired immunity, explaining each aspect of the response and how innate and acquired systems interact. The effects of deficiency in particular components are illustrated with reference to specific immunodeficiencies.
