Evidence-based management of glue ear

Bristol Royal Hospital for Sick Children, St Michaels Hill, Bristol, UK

Abstract

Recent and current longitudinal trials of childhood development and multicentre trials of surgical treatment of otitis media with effusion or glue ear demonstrate the difficulties of carrying out evidence-based research in this field. They also demonstrate that for research to be effective, studies and trials must be properly financed and appropriately organized, particularly to allow sub-group meta-analyses. Such studies require national and international funding and only in this way will adequate data become available upon which appropriate clinical judgements can be made.
