Abstract

Thoracic surgical problems are an important cause of mortality and morbidity in neonates. We outline conditions of the oesophagus, diaphragm, lung and airways and pleura. Oesophageal atresia (OA) with or without tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF) and congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) are commonest and are described in detail. Some of the less commonly encountered conditions, increasingly detected antenatally, are often asymptomatic on delivery, presenting the neonatologist and neonatal surgeon with a management dilemma.

Keywords: congenital diaphragmatic hernia, oesophageal atresia, tracheo-oesophageal fistula
