Ethical principles of paediatric research

Department of Child Life and Health, 20 Sylvan Place, Edinburgh, EH9 1UW, UK

Abstract

Good research with children is critical for the advancement of their care. Research must be properly performed whether it is therapeutic or non-therapeutic. The sanction of a properly constituted Ethics Advisory Committee should be in place before any research project is started. Consent in research with children is given by the parents, but in non-therapeutic research the child's assent is also mandatory, though this is not absolute in therapeutic research.
