Recognition and management of fabricated and induced illness
Abstract
Clinical skills include eliciting a clear history and assessing by examination, investigation and intervention the reasons for the child being brought for an opinion. We can be misled by reports which are incomplete, exaggerated or untrue. Whatever the motivation, this can lead to inappropriate and harmful acts upon the child by tests or treatments. Improved awareness and clinical skill should be supplemented by early collaboration with colleagues in paediatrics and child protection when there is uncertainty or persisting suspicions.
