Abstract

Chronic renal failure in children is part of a lifelong cycle of illness with progression through dialysis and transplantation. The preservation of existing renal function is of paramount importance, and benefits from early referral to a paediatric nephrologist. Specific treatment aimed at countering the effects of the failing kidney, including hypertension, anaemia, cardiovascular disease, renal bone disease and growth failure, is required in addition to general interventions aimed at benefiting the child and family. Optimal care of these children is delivered through a multidisciplinary team approach with input from the medical and nursing staff, teacher, social worker, psychologist, dietician, and the child and family.
