Abstract

Published evidence shows that, in the UK, referral for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support of relatively mature eligible infants with respiratory failure who are failing conventional therapy can be expected to have a better outcome than with continued conventional care. We recommend that neonatal intensive care units have written guidelines to initiate early discussion with a neonatal ECMO centre about referral.
