Abstract

Although some have questioned the value of the neonatal examination, the yield of abnormal findings remains high and it is likely to remain standard practice. Furthermore, the formal contact offers an opportunity to provide reassurance and healthcare advice, and to detect maternal depression. The way in which the medical examination is conducted has not changed, but this article reviews new material which is available on the ways in which screening for important neonatal conditions might be improved.
