The persistently abnormal chest radiograph in children

Department of Paediatric Radiology, Institute of Child Health, Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital, University of Liverpool, Eaton Road, Alder Hey, Liverpool, L12 2AP, UK

Abstract

A persistently abnormal chest radiograph is not uncommon in paediatric medicine. Resolution is the usual consequence, however, certain patterns, both radiological and clinical, point towards an underlying diagnosis. This paper highlights these patterns with illustrations. Close liaison between the physician and radiologist is needed to ensure that these children are appropriately investigated. In some cases chest radiograph change may be the only indication of an underlying condition, prompt treatment for which may prevent long-term morbidity.
