The experience of doing research

Summary 

This article focuses on how a medical student, trainee or general paediatrician may experience research in the UK. The discussion includes potential opportunities and motivations for undertaking research at different stages in a paediatrician's career, including scientific curiosity, career progression, enhancing ones teaching abilities and improving morale. The skills and personal characteristics that may be needed will be examined, and things that may be learnt will be highlighted. The most appropriate size and type of research project will also be discussed. Finally useful sources of support and further information are given.
