Inflammatory bowel disease

Summary 

At least 25% of cases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) present in the paediatric age range. Prompt accurate diagnosis, age-appropriate treatments and multidisciplinary support systems are crucial to minimise both short- and long-term physical and psychological morbidity. This article summarises the epidemiology, aetiology, presentation, investigation and treatment options in paediatric IBD, highlighting the differences from adult practice. The most common causes of rectal bleeding in children are also discussed.
