Summary 

Appraisal for career-grade medical staff is an annual process that leads to an agreed personal developmental plan (PDP). The PDP sets the agenda for medical and personal learning for the forthcoming year. This article outlines the process, its advantages and problems and offers advice on how paediatricians can maximise its benefits for themselves.
