Summary

The paper provides the view of a chief executive in an NHS Trust, with many years experience of appointing consultants across a wide range of specialties. It is designed to remove some of the mystery surrounding a process which, although enshrined in regulations and formal guidance is, like all processes, capable of being prepared and managed. A checklist of tips, suggestions and manoeuvres are suggested with an emphasis on the performance, contribution and commitment of the individual candidate in what is for the individual and the employing organisation one of the biggest decisions to be made.
