Summary

This review discusses the shared care of children with renal disease between the district general hospital-based general paediatrician and the tertiary centre-based specialist paediatric nephrologist. The concept and scope of shared care is discussed primarily with reference to the joint outpatient renal clinic, but we also suggest how the scope of shared care could be further expanded beyond this. There is little published literature on this subject outside of the mental health sector. The views presented in this review therefore represent a combination of evidence from the literature, anecdotal data and the personal views of the authors.
