Pneumonia: current challenges and treatment

Academic Division of Child Health, E Floor East Block, University Hospital, Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, NG7 2UH UK

Abstract

Pneumonia is a relatively common cause of childhood morbidity and frequently warrants admission to hospital. Many infections are viral in origin especially in the under twos and Strep. pneumoniae and M. pneumoniae are the two most likely treatable causative organisms. Despite increasing concern about the emergence of penicillin-resistant pneumococci, narrow-spectrum prescribing of antibiotics is recommended as it will be effective in most cases and will help to prevent the further increase in antibiotic resistance.
